Apparently James and Gillian are working their way through each of Dunedin’s pubs, in order to select the venue. I hear that the front-runner at the moment is the Captain Cook Tavern, well patronized by University of Otago students.

Update: The venue will be The Bog. See here for the location.
Update: Transport and Accommodation details.
Is it by the sea? It always tastes better in beach pubs. :-)
The Cook is inland. But James and Gillian are trying out a number of pubs this Saturday. The trouble is that the Harbourside and beach pubs are a bit sterile and wholesome, whereas the inner-city pubs have character and charm and special smells of their own.
Sterile and wholesome would definitely spoil the flavour. I can always steal a bike and get to the beach for a midnight swim…
Bring a wetsuit if you have one. I can’t get in without one.
Steph,
I surf six months of the year here in the Dunners, and the warmest the water ever gets is about 16 degrees (61 degrees Fahrenheit).
There are places to hire such things as wetsuits and there is good surfing all over the map down here, so it’s worth the cold. Just make sure to bring some fierce with you …
Eric
I do have a wetsuit – in Napier … where I only use it in winter. I’ll probably go there first. 16 degrees!!! That’s at least 8 degrees colder than Hawkes Bay!
Eric – some fierce what?
Steph,
Just some fierce.
Eric
I’m full of fierce – I’m a creature of habit, slave to routine and glutton for punishment. Freezing water is fine. :-)
James and I have actually thought that at least part of the Conference – like, the chatting, drinking, dining, oggling part – could be down at St Clair beach – there are lots of nice cafes/restaurants with beach views – and most importantly, views of surfers!! :)
Will post photos!
And do stay on for the conference “Towards a Unified Science of Religion, if only to poke fun…
Fun? Fun?! There is none of this so-called ‘fun’ in the rigor of scientific method, only the serious and inevitable march of logic towards an irrefutable Theory of Everything.
I suggest Albar! It’s a smallish room, all dark and dingy; lots of scotch, though I hear not as much as that place near the railway station.
